Primary Sport Funding

Sports Premium Grant

Background

The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for the academic years 2013 to 2014 and 2014 to 2015 to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - will be allocated to primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Purpose of Funding

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

How will we be using our funding?

  • To provide pupils with access to sports coaching which develops fitness, stamina, and health and well-being.
  • To upgrade and extend the range of sports equipment available to pupils within school.
  • Development of inter-Borough competitive sports.
  • Offering a greater range of after-school clubs with specialist coaches.
  • To provide teachers/coaches with the opportunity for CPD.

What outcomes can we expect from the increased funding?

  • To raise the profile of Sport and Fitness beyond the curriculum.
  • Inspire, and give children opportunities, to become an Olympian or Paralympian of the future.
  • To give pupils the opportunity to take part in sporting festivals and competitions.
  • Encourage lifelong habits of physical activity.
  • To provide more pupils with the opportunity to participate in sport beyond the curriculum.
